Super Sprouts

What can be sprouted?

Seeds, including grasses such as wheat and barley, nuts, grains, beans, legumes, can be sprouted.  Some of the most common sprouts that are grown are alfalfa, sunflower, garbanzo (otherwise known as chickpea), lentils, oats, green peas, barley, and of course buckwheat, to name but a few.

What is involved when sprouting?

When sprouting buckwheat I ;

take the original seed and rinse it with cold water.

I then soak the seed for a maximum of 6 hours in cold filtered water, releasing important enzymes, making digestion and assimilation easier for the body.

Sprouting then begins. To stop the seeds going rancid they are rinsed in cold water twice a day. Buckwheat, especially, tends to form a slimy coating if left for too long without rinsing.

Once the seed has sprouted a tail no longer then the length of the seed itself, it is then ready to be dehydrated at a low temperature to lightly crisp.

Why are sprouted seeds/nuts better for you than normal seeds/nuts?

As we all know nuts and seeds are a fantastic way of getting more vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 and 6 into our diets.  However, during germination, there is a sharp increase in the vitamin content in sprouts.  Due to the fact that they are basically young plants, they contain all the valuable enzymes, proteins, minerals, trace elements and natural vitamins required for a plant to grow.  When a seed starts to sprout the nutrients contained in it become available in a living form -  remember our motto, living food, living you.  Seeds and nuts in their whole state can be very difficult for the body to digest.

Unless we have the advantage of home-grown fruit and vegetables, many of us are guilty of not buying fresh, seasonal produce all year round.  Many of you have undoubtedly bought strawberries in March, and apples in June shipped over from America.  Since sprouts are eaten pretty much up to the point that they are picked, practically no nutrients are lost.

Now do you see why super sprouts are just so damned super!?!
